James Jean: Illustrator

Wow! I mean wow. I literally stumbled across this guy’s work by accident in an article on CNN.com. Above is the original picture I saw…

I couldn’t read anything because CNN resized the picture to an unreadble degree (which makes it pointless to include a worded comic strip in the first place), but I did like the art enough to do a Google search on the author James Jean. The above picture is a piece James did of the Donna’s.

This piece (pictured above) is the perfect example of his style, featuring Kirk Kobain of Nirvana swinging a guitar at the heads of the members of Metallica. Part cartoon, part realistic, dynamic but still perfectly viable as a static work.

James Jean currently resides in LA. His work has been featured in SPIN Magazine, Rolling Stone, WIRED and more.

Visit him on the web at JamesJean.com or visit his blog at Process Recess.

Have you seen some of JJ’s Batgirl covers? Some of the most beautiful unappreciated work on a mainstream comic character ever. I’d really love to see him tackle an entire book/story one day.

I’ve never seen the Batgirl stuff but I’ll be sure to go back to his site to check some of it out! You’re definitely right though, he’s a very under-appreciated artist in the comics community. That may be why he choose to seek out a career in print illustration.
