"The Long Tail" by Chris Anderson

I recently posted the following synopsis of Chris Anderson’s book the “Long Tail” over at my Meetup.com group The Atlanta Weblogger Meetup Group:

A friend of mine, the former web editor of Creative Loafing, turned me on to this book a few months ago. It was written by WIRED magazine editor Chris Anderson and discusses many things about where we are headed as a culture in the wake of the internet and the new business models that are developing as the result. Some things he touches upon are how targeting ‘niche’ markets is taking precedence over generalization and mass marketing, why recommender systems are critical to online success, and how to survive in this new “market of multitudes”.

What does all this have to do with you? If you’re a professional blogger, remember that no matter what you create, you’re selling a product. Even if it’s just stories about your life, if you develop a solid following, essentially what you’re doing is selling yourself. You become an online personality – the new millennium entertainer.

As bloggers we often represent the most extreme examples of the niche market and thus, this book offers invaluable information that will help you understand the new cultural landscape. While Hollywood and the RIAA scramble to rethink their business models, the power is in our hands to conceptualize, create and distribute whatever content we want. This book provides a solid foundation to help you understand how this all came about and how it works.
