Hacking Super Tuesday

So off I go on a gust of gall and with a lot of hope. Today is Super Tuesday and I’m going to go do my part to be a good American. Here’s my tips on how to cope with the drama of such a Historic primary.

1. Go Early. Your job has to give you the day off without penalty. The poll will have snacks if you get hungry. Take your iPod or a laptop with a movie to watch while you stand in line. If you can’t be patient when deciding on the fate of the nation then you really need to reconsider your priorities. There really is no excuse when it comes to taking a leave of absence from work. Here’s my reasoning. If you live in a busy district, and you end up at polls at the end of the day, you’ll regret it.

2. Don’t talk politics in line. If your mind can be changed AT THE POLLS for reasons that may be superficial then you may regret a spur of the moment decision later. The fact of the mater is, if you aren’t convicted about who you’re voting for and why, then you may as well not gamble your vote away. You can atleast pretend you give a sh*t. ;)

3. Carpool. If you can, go to the polls with co-workers friends, or enemies. At least you know none of them won’t have excuses for not voting later.

4. If it rains, sleets or snows: Grow a pair. Get your ass out there in vote. Remember that day in 2004 when you had a wicked hangover and you decided you couldn’t get out of bed to go cast your ballot…well we ended up with Bush. So let’s not go for a repeat.

5. Double check your precinct BEFORE you leave the house and end up in the wrong place. In Georgia, this website will tell you where you need to vote. Other states have similar sites (1, 2) so a quick Google search should find yours.

6. Donate. The best way to help your party choice at this point is to donate. Whether they win or lose tomorrow, there’s still a long road a head for them all. All of the candidates accept money from as little as $5 or $10 on up to a few thousand dollars through their websites. I found out I could donate up to $4600 bucks to my candidate! That was gtk but I just gave what I could afford. =)

7. Ask questions. Make sure you know how to use the voting machine or paper ballots before you try to cast a vote. It’s better to ask now than regret it later when you aren’t sure how your vote will be counted.

8. Stop and think. Think about the last 8 years, the next 8 and the 8 after that. Whether you like Obama, McCain, Romney, Clinton or whoever, just take the time to reflect over the longterm versus the short term. What makes this country great? Why do you call yourself an American? What makes you love this country? Did you do that? Okay, now you’re almost ready.

9. Make Calls. Once you’ve voted, or while you’re waiting, or before you go. Your candidate sure could use your help! Some of them allow you to call on their behalf from your home or cell phone. Make a few calls, ask the stranger on the other end to support the candidate you like. #2 on this list says that those people won’t be swayed but if they are, they may be swayed in your candidates favor.

10. Don’t watch the media blitz that will surround the event. This really personal choice, but you’ll hear about it endlessly for the next several weeks regardless. Save yourself the stress and find out the results on Wednesday morning.
