Kevin Rose Live Video Chat

Tonight around 11:00PM EST Kevin Rose (via his Pownce account) announced that he was going to try out Yahoo’s new “live.yahoo.com”. Turns out it was bad news for Yahoo. After word got out, his room on ‘live’ was immediately flooded with traffic slowing servers to a crawl. We couldn’t get him to Karaoke but yes that is a mic in his hand.

Yahoo Live is pretty cool, it’s basically allows you to hold a video conference with multiple people. At the time of this beta test, you could have up to five video casts going on at once: the main person, and four others. All five can hear, see and chat with each other in real time. Anyone else in the ‘room’ (which is basically a chat room) can also hear and see all the video feeds. If it ever wants to go big, it’s going to have to be able to handle more than the 70+ people who ended up in the room.

Live Yahoo looks very neat, I’ve been using ooVoo since they are one of my clients. They are a free video conferencing service that lets up to six people on a call at once. It is worth checking out if you aren’t familiar with it.
