It’s a true shame about the Power Plant. The food is so hotdamn good that as I write this I’m salivating. On the other hand, you’ll wait so hotdamn long to get it you may not even enjoy it when it arrives. I try to give everyone and everything a second chance and the Power Plant is no exception. When I went there a few weeks ago, I didn’t necessarily have a good time. I waited nearly 40 minutes for my meal, after waiting 15 just too order! The waitress was swamped, even though there was only a handful of people in the place. She must have been new because when people walked in she didn’t acknowledge them or welcome them. she just rolled her eyes and scurried off into the kitchen and hid. After trying to flag her down for 15 minutes after being sat just so I could order a glass of water, she finally came and gave me the time of day. The water however would have to wait, I didn’t get it until halfway through the 40 minute wait for my meal.

I’m not here to rag on the place, because when the food did arrive I was infinitely impressed. Power Plant specializes in vegan and vegetarian alternatives to traditional meals. Chicken is replaced with shicken (soy chicken), fish becomes (shish) and ribs become (sribs). My meal was a soy chicken wrap covered with a cajun sauce and a plate full of big o’ steak fries. I couldn’t believe it. Their fake chicken tasted better than real chicken! It was so good I had to ask the waitress if they hadn’t made a mistake and given me the real thing instead.

My second visit was much better all around. There was a different waitress who was especially kind and apologetic about the long wait. She seemed to be trying to run PR for the rest of the staff. Obviously the timing of meals is a consistent enough problem at Power Plant that she knew she had to. This time I tried a new meal (fried Shicken with Garlic Asparagus and some more of them big o’ steak fries) and it was even better than the first!

As a man who likes to flirt with vegetarianism, I’ve been to my share of veg restaurants…R. Thomas (Midtown Atlanta) , The Grit (in Athens), Soul Vegetarian (Atlanta) and many more…none of them compare to the ‘authenticity’ of meat flavors that the Power Plant offers. Some “v” people might find that a turn off (“Why would I want my fake meat to taste like real meat?”) but for people like me it’s a good way to trick your body and ween out all those cravings for chicken fried chicken smothered in gravy from big mommas house.

Anyways, by all means check out the Power Plant but do yourself a favor and call in your order 30 minutes in advance!
